Salinas (population of 156,516) is the seat of Monterey County.
Salinas is the regional shopping area with a new auto center, a number
of shopping malls, and antique and boutique shops in Oldtown Salinas.
The strong economy of the local agriculture industry is partnered with
a relaxed lifestyle to create a high quality of life in the Salinas
Valley. The moderate climate is ideal, with an average temperature of
68 degrees and Mediterranean-like weather in the summer. If you've ever
eaten salad, you've probably had a piece of Salinas, known by the odd
moniker "salad bowl of the world." Salinas' location in coastal
California assures the region of almost-perfect weather, cooled by the
inland breeze yet warmed by the strong Western sun.

Salinas Valley
The Salinas Valley, located in Monterey County (population 410,772)
is a rich cultural landscape allowing visitors and residents to enjoy
the beauty of a pristine environment coupled with easy access to Northern
California and Central Coast hot spots. This valley sits between the
Gabilan and Santa Lucia mountain ranges, and follows the Salinas River
to the Monterey Bay. Salinas is located 20 miles northeast of Monterey,
60 miles south of San Jose, 101 miles south of San Francisco and 325
miles north of Los Angeles. Gonzales,

Prunedale
Prunedale (population of 16,432) is an unincorporated community,
and is located in the scenic canyons and wooded hills of north Monterey
County. Depending on who you ask, the community covers from 3 to 38
square miles. The newly approved Prunedale Census Designated Place will
encompass many more square miles. It is 8 miles north of Salinas and
55 miles south of San Jose, seven miles east of Moss Landing and the
Pacific Ocean. It is nestled between the Santa Cruz Mountains to the
north, the Diablo Range on the southeast and the Sierra de Salinas which
serves as a backdrop to the rich agricultural Salinas Valley to the
south.

Monterey Peninsula
The Monterey Peninsula is located 125 miles south of San Francisco and
345 miles north of Los Angeles. Approximately 112,000 people live in
the seven incorporated cities on the Peninsula with another 24,000 living
in unicorporated areas. The Peninsula experiences a moderate yearly
climate; the temperature ranges from an average low of 47.6 degrees
to an average high of 65.3 degrees. The economy of the Peninsula is
impacted by a multi-service military presence, large-scale tourism and
light industrial activities such as research laboratories and educational
facilities. The Peninsula is rich in recreational and cultural activities.
Known as the "Golf Capital of the World," it has 17 golf courses and
is the setting for many championship events. There are also more than
100 art galleries and studios. Special programs include the annual Bach
Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival. Some 75 cultural, sports and
just-for-fun events are held each year.

Pacific Grove
Pacific Grove (population 16,850 is located on the tip of the Monterey
Peninsula and Bay. Founded as a religious retreat in 1875, PG as it
is called locally, has grown into a quaint and beautiful city. Its extensive
beaches and craggy coastline are ideally suited for picnicking or strolling.
Known as "Butterfly Town, USA," the city, between October and March,
is host to thousands of Monarch butterflies which migrate from Canada
and Alaska to spend the winter here. The butterflies have been finding
their way to particular trees for years, but no one knows how, since
each year they make the trip for the first time.

Monterey
Monterey (population 32,900) is located on the Monterey Bay off Highway
1. Although periodically inhabited by native Indians and seafaring explorers,
the city was officially founded in 1770 by the Spanish. Much of the
early charm of the old Spanish capital is retained in the historic buildings
and homes of the Old Town. Numerous residential districts provide natural
settings for homes and gardens for people desiring a superb climate
amidst a spectacular backdrop of land and water. The city boasts a fine
small craft harbor and Fisherman's Wharf as well as John Steinbeck's
Cannery Row known for its restaurants and shops and the newly built
Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Del Monte Forest
Del Monte Forest (population 5,840 unincorporated) or Pebble Beach
as it is more widely known is situated on the westernmost point of the
Peninsula overlooking Carmel Bay and the Pacific Ocean. An area of unforgettable
beauty, its featured attractions include cypress trees that grow no
where else in the world as exemplified by its emblem, the Lone Cypress.
Additionally there are miles of breathtaking shoreline, scenic 17-Mile
Drive and , of course, several championship golf courses. Pebble Beach
is privately maintained and entry is limited through five security gates.
Nonresidents pay a modest fee to visit Pebble Beach and Del Monte Forest.

Carmel (Carmel-By-The-Sea)
Carmel (Carmel-By-The-Sea) (population 4,420) is situated on Carmel
Bay west of Highway 1 in an unusual setting of scenic beauty and picturesque
charm. Its white sand beach has been kept free of commercial enterprises
although its many specialty shops are only a short walk from the ocean.
While its history is several centuries old, Carmel's cultural heritage
really thrived when many artists, writers and musicians came here from
San Francisco following the earthquake and fire of 1906. As a result
its natural beauty has long been extolled by such illustrative visitors
as Robert Louis Stevenson. Today the "village" prides itself on its
smallness and fiercely protects its individuality and uniqueness.

Carmel Valley
Carmel Valley (population 12,440 unicorporated) extends 26 miles eastward
and inland from Carmel Bay. It is a distinctive area of great beauty
varying in width and hemmed in by steep and rugged mountains on the
south and high ridges of the Peninsula on the north. Its 25,000 acres
provide a gentle mix of residential and agricultural land use with many
orchards and grazing horses. The climate is considerably warmer than
that of the coast, making it the site of several sunny resorts, swimming
pools and championship golf courses.

Del Rey Oaks
Del Rey Oaks (population 1,690) is situated between Monterey and Seaside
off Highway 1. Originally part of Monterey, it was founded in 1941 and
incorporated in 1953. An attractive residential community, it claims
to have the most "fog-free" climate of all the Peninsula cities. Zoned
almost entirely residential, it does have several singular commercial
enterprises. No web site.

Seaside
Seaside (population 31,550) is situated on Highway 1 between Ft. Ord
and Monterey. Founded in 1835 and incorporated in 1954, Seaside is a
rapidly growing business and residential community and now is the largest
city on the Peninsula in terms of population. Good weather and expansive
views of the Monterey Bay and the Peninsula skyline are obvious residential
attractions. Commercial and service facilities abound since it is a
profitable and efficient location from which to serve the entire Peninsula.
Seaside boasts a modern showplace city hall, new library and multimillion
dollar automobile sales and service center that has been model for a
number of cities in the state. Its sphere in influence includes portions
of the recently closed Ft. Ord complex and the newly developing California
State University - Monterey Bay.

Sand City
Sand City (population 190) is located on the Monterey Bay west of and
adjacent to Seaside. Founded and incorporated in 1960, it was primarily
an industrial area of moving and storage firms, auto repair shops, warehouses
and small specialty shops. Over the last few years it has become a major
retail center featuring such companies as Price Costco, Target, Lucky-Sav-On,
Office Depot and Orchard Supply Hardware among others.

Marina
Marina (population 19,600) is situated on Highway 1 ten miles west of
US 101. Newest and third largest of the Peninsula cities, it still has
areas available to further expansion. Primarily a residential community
it also has a good number of businesses catering to both travelers and
local residents. At present Marina is in the process of developing an
expanded retail industry and beautification program. Its sphere of influence
includes portions of the recently closed Ft. Ord complex and the newly
developing University of California - Santa Cruz Center.
